he was the most fearless dog
In the entire south

I got Rusty when I was 16, he was my best friend and we went everywhere together.
and like most dogs he loved sitting in the passenger seat of my pickup with his head sticking out the window
when I got married to Carol Ann he was 10 years old and soon developed a flatulence problem
vet said there weren't nothing he could do to treat it.
My wife told me Rusty stays outside or she was gonna leave me, and somehow Rusty knew and never came in the house again.
He wait outside for me and many a nite Carol-Ann used to wake me up when I fell asleep with Rusty out on the porch.

Rusty used to like to walk over to the the pond near our place and he loved to cool off by rolling in the muddy shores so along with his farting he was usually dirty too.
Folks was mean, used to call him old smeller and I'm glad he couldn't understand them and just wagged his tail.
I remember one morning he let one rip near the mailman who kicked him right square in the butt.
I saw the whole thing and told that guy if he ever did it again he would get more than a kick from me.

The townsfolk all looked down at Rusty, mothers used to pull their kids away from him like he was diseased
But Rusty didn't mind he was such a good dog, rolled with the punches so they say. I preciate that bout him.
One time I caught one of the Johnson boys throwing rocks at him and another time some kids tying a can to his tail.
Kids is cruel but Rusty still loved all the kids he was a great dog, always playful and never ever bit no one.

Well when Rusty was 16 and not as chipper as he once was
Grandma Mosely wasn't watching her grandson too close
and he went too far out into the pond and the boy was going to drown.
I heard her yelling and by the time I got to the pond
Rusty had already jumped into it and started paddling his way to the boy
he was only halfway there and then by the power of God his curse became his saving grace.
He starting farting and his powerful butt propelled him to the boy just as he went under.
Rusty yanked him back up and fart-paddled his way back to the shore where I grabbed the boy
and one of the looky-loo's offered to do some CPR but it weren't needed Rusty had saved the day.
but Saving the boy was too much for Rusty's old heart, and the next morning
when I went outside to greet him he stood up, ran over to me, farted and then he died in my arms.

Well next day the news had got out , and all the townfolk came out to Rusty's funeral,
they cried real hard for that flatulent dirty mutt just like they would for anybody else.
And a few days later Townsfolk made a plaque and nailed to the tree,
near the pond, so folks would never forget Rusty.
It read "this is the spot where Rusty the dog saved 4 year old
Jimmy Mosley-Allen-Rogers-Talbot on July 22nd 1989 that cost the dog his life.
Jimmy, he’s just Jimmy Talbot now, a successful lawyer in these parts
and he dumped all them hyphenated names, I kind of liked that cause
as I always wondered how many names his kids were gonna get,
kinda silly don’t-cha think?
Anyway Big Jim Talbot, as he is known today,
commissioned a statue last year right near the pond in honor of Rusty
and he got the respect in death , he never got in life.
I'll never forget him and neither will folks that see his statue when they go to the pond
